BPPV Physiotherapy
The vestibular system:
The vestibular system is what allows us to sense our position, movement and balance. This information comes from structures within the inner ear.
BPPV and vertigo:
Vertigo is the false sensation of spinning. The most common cause of vertigo is a specific type of inner ear dysfunction: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), affecting approx. 2.4% of the population.
Vestibular Physiotherapy:
The most important role of physiotherapy in cases of vertigo is a proper diagnosis. Vertigo can be caused by other (potentially very serious) conditions. It is always recommended to be assessed to insure symptoms truly represent BPPV.
Physiotherapy for BPPV involves the physiotherapist moving the head in specific patterns to clear dislodged crystals from within the canals of the inner ear. Symptoms are normally abolished in 1-3 treatments.
